The conductor’s role is to create and interpret the music, which involves changes in time, speed, dynamics and mood. It is up to the musicians, including the organist, to follow his or her direction at the same time as reading their sheet music. Normally, organists manage with a mirror, so they can see behind them to keep in time with the conductor. However, this is less than optimal in many ancient buildings and churches where performances take place.
This time The City of Bristol choir knew that in two of the venues they were performing in the organist, Richard Johnson, would have no view of the conductor at all. They decided to do things differently to usual and took one of our CCTV systems with them!
